Hi, I just purchased a good used Tascam MS-16. It seems to work great, but it didn't come with a manual so I'm really not sure what all it's capable of. Would anyone know where I could score a manual? Format doesn't matter - original, photocopy, .pdf, anything will do.

Also, my recorder didn't come with the optional dbx units. Does anyone have any idea where I might look for those, or even just what the model number for them would be?

The manual was only ever available from TASCAM parts in the States or Canada.

That's where I got mine and I looked everywhere else first too! :o

They go for about 30 bucks and they usually have a photocopy of the original available for sale without the original binder.

The optional dbx units are called the DX-8DS and two are required for the MS-16. They have a simple, multi-pin hook-up that covers the in/out/logic/power all in one nice neat cable.

The only problem is they are next to impossible to find as a separately sold item. :(

In the past 3 years, I have seen but one set of two for sale on Ebay and that was over a year ago.

Best bet is to learn how to record hot and thus keep your hiss levels down that way.

The deck is spec'd for 69-70db s/n ratio per channel so, if you keep your levels healthy at 0vu or slightly beyond to +3vu, you should be able to keep the hiss fairly non-evasive.

Keep in mind too, there are many excellent hiss reduction algorithms in the digital world now so once you have completed a two track digital master, you can clean up any remnants of hiss to a decent degree.

Cheers! :)
