Hi all,
I got an old Tascam 122 MKII tape deck for nothing (along with a Dolby 363, but that's another story
) and tested it. The transport is pretty bust up and iit squeels like a pig. So i was going to dump it.
Then i decided to take a song i'd mastered, run it out of the FW1814 into the Tascam and back in. I ran the levels just under overload, and used monitor source, and i recorded it back in.
It does make things nicer, waveform wise you gain a lot more movement, but what i noticed mainly was a less wide stereo field, with a more solid focus in the middle, and a reduction of brittle highs.
Acoustic guitar notes had a little more weight to them. What is doing this? Is it the act of running throught the gain stage in the tascam? I assumed this would happen (hence trying it out) but i was surprised by the 'mono effect'
any insights? do you want some comparison clips?
