hello, I'm new to this board and new to an (old) Tascam M35 mixer.

I've tried to do the right thing and use the search function and found this excelent thread https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=116520 which has helped me figure a few things out. But basicly I stil need some advise on how to setup the buss/aux and yeah, (I'm kinda new to this and a bit lost, I need to start from scratch) Also is the M35 basicly the same beast as the M30 in the other thread?

So any info anyone can throw my way regarding this mixer would be cool. -history, bussing, effect patching, interesting and novel stories - all welcome. (I'd LOVE to get a hold of a manual too)

thanks in advance

anyone?
maybe i should be more specific with my questions -

- This M35 has a two pin power lead and a separate terminal at the back labeled "GRND". Does this grnd terminal need to be connected to ground? Because I've connected a ground lead and get a LOUD HUM, (works fine with no hum without a ground lead so does it need one?)

- Can someone talk me through (or link me to somewhere) that describes the correct method to use the 4 subgroups? I've read that I need to complete a loop with rca leads to get it to work but I don't really understand what to connect.

- Whats the difference between the control room feed and the studio feed? should I be using the rca outs or the 1/4" port?

Sorry for the dumb questions but if anyone can talk me through???

The two prong power plug is normal, as-is.

I believe the GROUND lug would be to link chassis grounds of TWO M35's, and/or the M35 and it's compatible expander, NOT to hook the ground lug to the earth ground in the wall socket, although I've not tried this, and I don't see what harm could be done by doing so.

When you plug an input into the XLR connectors, 1-8, that's what you have, an INPUT on a CHANNEL.

Then, the colored ASSIGN buttons, 1-4, on EACH CHANNEL, are what assign the channel to subgroups, or BUSSes 1-4. The output of the BUSSes 1-4 are output on the back of the board, toward the bottom-left, and are labelled LINE OUT and AUX OUT, 1-4. The LINE OUT and AUX OUT are a common signal, output in parallel, and each of the 4 BUSSES has a LINE OUT and AUX OUT.

If you're using a Tascam recorder, you better have the LEVEL switches on each BUSS output switched to LOW. I've not looked up the spec in the manual, but I believe that is the -10dbV oprating level, that most Tascam recorders run at, over RCA connectors.

BUSS and SUBGROUP means the same thing, but Tascam primarily uses BUSS and all the rest seem to use the term SUBGROUP.

The M-35 is a somewhat different design than the M-30, although in the same product release cycle, of 1982. It's more on par with the M-308, in features, so your best operational examples and analogies might be there.

I can't remember if I have an M-35 manual, but I have the M-35 board itself, for reference.

The CONTROL ROOM and STUDIO FEED,...

I have no direct information on, at this time, but I believe this would all be associated with the TALKBACK section, or feature. The STUDIO FEED on 1/4" socket might be to accommodate any 1/4" feed needs, like to a PA system in another room. There is STUDIO FEED on dual-RCA connectors, too.

I think these different STUDIO FEEDS were put on RCA and 1/4" jack for flexibility. I have no hard info or reference on this section of the board, but I'll look for a manual. The details of the M-35 might be adequately explained in the 300 Series manual, and I'll check that, too.;)

The Only Loop Connector You Need,...

would be a small loop connector on EACH CHANNEL, from the ACCESS SEND to the ACCESS RECIEVE, on each channel, 1-8. That's located on the back of the board, top row. Most M35's you'll find will have 8 little jumpers installed there.

Now, on the other hand, an effects, or AUX SEND requires an AUX RECIEVE, and this, in effect, is a loop. That's an AUX or EFFECTS LOOP, which is quite another thing. It's an optional setup that you'd hook effects up to the mixer, in loop configuration, and you'd send outputs to the effects unit, that feed back to the board, and into the mix. An effects loop.

Hope I've covered all the points, now!?!?

you have answered my questions. Thankyou!

"would be a small loop connector on EACH CHANNEL, from the ACCESS SEND to the ACCESS RECIEVE, on each channel, 1-8. That's located on the back of the board, top row. Most M35's you'll find will have 8 little jumpers installed there."

Ahh now this is probably my problem. There are no jumpers. I'm jumperless! The guy I got it from mentioned needing to connect the rca ports but didn't say which or how. (the mixer was shipped from another state and I didn't get the chance to properly question him)

My problem is I can't seem to manage to send (any) channels (1-8) to any of the subgroups (1-4). I've tried all the assign button and faders on all channels. I DO get signal out to my monitors & headphones via the master channel but nothing to the subgroups.

Do you know if this is because of the jumperlessness?
(p.s. sorry for bugging you)

Each channel, 1-8, should have the ACCESS SND & RCV jumpered together,...

with RCA jumper plugs or cables. If they are not installed, there would be a break point in the signal on each channel, and this would be a fundamental problem.

To have the board fully functional on all channels, you'll need those jumpers. The ACCESS-SND>RCV are there to enable flexible patching of effects dedicated to each channel, as opposed to the AUX-SEND/AUX-RECIEVE effects loop I mentioned earlier.

You'll need 8 short RCA patch cables, or [8] Tascam 2P Jumper Plugs.

The following cables are 6" Tascam color coded RCA jumper cables, [8/set]:

OR,... call Tascam Parts, at (312) 727-4840, and inquire about Tascam "2P Shorting Plugs" for the M30/M35/244 500-Series, & most of their other vintage mixers.
