TASCAM M-600....nice-looking desk....anyone ever used one?

There's a thread on here involving one I recall. Did you do a search here?

Hi Sweets,

Yes, silly me...I posted after doing a Google search that threw up little...then came here and found some stuff here. It seems it wasn't really regarded that highly....it is an attractive looking desk though. Maybe I need to get some beech side arms made for my Soundtracs PC Series desk? Proper wood on a desk somehow makes me feel good inside.

That's what I did!:D

Well I'm no expert but...You either love these Eq's or you hate them. Personally I love them! They added good bite, and no real color! Seemingly endless routing possibilities and all Balanced (with exception to Direct outs). This one is the single monitor version. But since these were developed as a modular system, If you started out with the lesser 24 channel version you could add the other two modules or 8 channels later! Or add a module of stereo channels, even switch out the single monitor for the duel monitor option. These are a lot of console and highly underrated! The only real challange for me has been the tt patch-bays and D-sub connections.

Love mine.

Yeah...That's one thing about them (not that they're the only console like this) but everything is on DSUB connectors.

IIRC many of the amp stages are built around the 5532.

Is the eq 4 band? Typical hi/low shelving with two swept mid-bands?

Yea Cory that's the layout. One thing cool about the (16) single monitor PGM/Buss modules. is that they also have the same Eq. section... So they can also be used as input channels.

One of the work-around's for me regarding the Balanced thing. I use the Tascam LA80 & LA81. I can then Bring the i/o connections through the rack unit in the form of patch cables to the Bantam P.B. (as seen in pictures 1,3, and 4).

Hey Ron,

How's the desk in terms of noise? I've currently repaired a few things on a Sountracs PC Series desk which is nice, but would be a bit noisy if it didn't have the fabulous midi muting system, which is a life-saver.
Al

Honestly Al, I think the noise is not a problem.. Seems pretty good to me, but keep in mind, 1. I have only used this Console for home recordings, and 2. I'm 58 and Don't have near the hearing I used to.:laughings:

Hey Ron,

I didn't think noise would be a problem on a $xx,000 desk....(how much were they new?), but I thought I'd ask. As it is, I'm only seven years behind you and have some hearing aids stuck in a draw upstairs...my hearing's down about 4dB around 2Khz....but I just couldn't get used to the horrible compression rates in the aids....made making music really suck!

:facepalm::D

I can't remember now what the price was, but there were a lot of options. The fully maxed out version wasn't cheap! And not intended for the home studio for sure. But I think the timing was the worst enemy to this (Large) Board. It was in competition to Mackie, Soundcraft, and Yamaha to name a few that had way smaller versions of the same format for considerably less Pesos ah.. I mean Moo-la.

16 channel base models listed at $10k in the US according to the 1991 catalog I have. There's no mention in it of what the costs are for all the add-ons. I'd guess the price would essentially double for a 32 channel version with the patch bay, producer's desk and pedestal with the wood trim kit.

Cheers! :)

Thanks Gost..So there you go! For that kind of money back then, well.. Heck.... even Now! I can't get it sold for $1200 :cursing:

I didn't know you were trying to sell it...?

That's a lot of mixer for $1200...including the patchbay sidecar and dsub snakes??

Crazy.

Yea.... the whole enchilada! even patch cables! Minus the out board gear
(pictured in the rack).

Found this after seeing your ad on CL. sent you an email asking for dimensions. Curious as to why you are selling. I have an MS-16 and BR-20, looks like you had the same. Pros/cons?

Utah Blues, Check your email.

I think the whole set-up was first class. Yes I indeed used the MS-16 recorder, and BR-20 mixdown combo. With the M-600 in the middle. It was perfect in this role, as it has the separate section to return the 16 tracks to where they can be processed, and mixed, as the inputs all have Eq. and aux's. There by doing all the signal sending, and monitoring all at the press of a button. As mentioned, the real challenge for me was routing the unbalanced outboard gear to the balanced Patch bay system, that incorporated D-sub 25 and Bantam connectors. After purchasing the necessary cables, and a LA 80 & 81. It became much more usable for my applications. The whole set-up is first class. All connections are made Via the patch-Bay's. No.... reaching around the back!:)

I decided to pass on the M600 in Germany.....not that it didn't look like it could be useful, but the console was in worse cosmetic condition than the Soundtracs PC Series I cureently have. If I'm going to upgrade the mixer, then the cosmeticss have to look right if I'm going to attempt to attract any paying customers.

That's a wise decision as the seller of that particular unit was using an image that a member here who is in the States took of his M-600 and that I had processed for the tascam wallpaper thread. He did that to try to represent his mixer and I know for sure, I at least was not asked for legal permission to use that image for the purpose of selling his mixer. Not cool and probably a sign of other issues with his own mixer that he was not willing to disclose.

Cheers! :)
