Hello -
I've been using a Tascam M-30 for the past 2 years as front end to my DAW and to an Otari MX5050 1/2 4 track. I have other decent preamps in my collection, but I've grown quite fond of the M-30's preamps for things like electric guitar and snare. I've used it with some success for out of the box mixes as well.
Despite being about 25 years old, it has performed flawlessly until a session last Saturday. Quite suddenly, the M-30's outputs (mains, subs, headphones) started to emit a nasty hum. When I turn the mixer off, it makes a sort of "laser gun" sound. Doesn't seem to be isolated to a specific channel input, so I'm assuming (with limited electronics knowledge) that it might be a blown cap somewhere in the output stage.
I'm not sure if I can find some one locally to diagnose and repair it, so I thought I'd take a shot at trying to repair it myself. I can work a solder gun and I've modified effects pedals and circuit-bent toy keyboards, but I'm purely an amateur.
Has anyone else run into a similar problem with any of the Tascam M series mixers? Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated.
