Tascam m-208 as pre-amp?

So after cringing about how cheap preamps are in our "magic boxes" we record into... It got me thinking:

I have an old Tascam M-208 analog mixer (from my early attempts at recording in the 80's) in my closet doing nothing. Was thinking was it worth it to (when I buy a condenser mic) get a phantom power unit and run the mic through the Tascam board prior to the line in of my Presonus Audiobox usb unit (bypass its preamp)? Currently I only is an sm58 into the Audiobox to record vocals? Would it be an improvement? I realize now that many here have preamps that cost more than many of the mics talked about here so...

Btw, my knowledge learned here now is:

1. Treat room
2. Preamp
finally...
3. The Mic

About right?

I used to have a m-216 many years ago, and the preamps were nothing special, however I did a lot of good recordings with it. If you need preamps why not use them, they are a whole lot better then some of the cheap stand alone pres around now.

Alan.

Just got back to this...
I wasn't sure if it was worth the effort as I only use one mic. If the phantom power is dirt cheap though then I'll give it a try. Does hold me back from getting a new mic without exploring the pre-amp.
