Tascam FW-1804.. or not?

OMG!
This interface intrigues me. It's got a really nice list of features. I like that it's basically the same thing as the Digi002 in the features.

The question is.. how is it? Does it have decent convertors? Is it going to stay together? Are the pres usable? Anyone notice any problems with using the ADAT and analog ins simultaneously?

If you've got one or at least have used one.. please let me know what's up.

I'm interested in getting one as an upgrade to my Terratec Phase 88. Maybe not a conversion upgrade. But at least an interface with an integrated monitor voulme, ADAT and analog, and rack-mounted. The rack mounting isn't necessary, but it would be nice. I'm also curious if it would be able to be used as my computers standard soundcard. I currently use the Phase 88 like that so I can listen to my monitors at all times.

If you have any suggestions, let me know.
 
If I was shopping for one I'd buy it. Tascam makes some very good products that work how they should. If you have the money you may want to look into getting a used DM-24 off ebay for around $1,000.00 and adding the firewire card $350.00 instead. With that combination you get 24 channels of I/O, 60 channels of mixing, DAW control, onboad effects from the DM24. Its the best setup for $1300.00 that you will find.
 
The effects from the DM-24.. does that mean it'll be taking a load off the processor. Also, would I be able to use any outboard preamps?

I have the 1884 which is the bigger model to the 1804. Works well, no major complaints. I find the converters better than the ones that were in my old Maudio setup, and the pres are very usable. Very neutral IMO. I haven't had an opportunity to try it with an ADAT hook up though so I can't answer that question. Oh and you can use it as your standard sound card if you want.

Hey Deepwater - Did you get the FW card for the DM-24 ? How’s that going?
 
Hmm. The DM-24 sounds like it would be awesome.. but I don't know. Cause I'd spend the same amount on the Tascam and an ADAT preamp rack.
 
Well one thing that is cool with the dm24 is the option of adding a meter bridge which the FW units dont have. Also there are more faders on the dm24 so you wouldn't have to do as much bank switching..
