Yep another topic from... you people are just to damn helpful!

I'm looking into and investigating some of my options for a new DAW. I'm looking into firwire right now, and think I want to go with an integrated unit if I go with firewire. I'm looking at the FW-1082 and it sounds great. I'm using Sonar 5 so the control surface compatibility will be great.

However, I came across a latency issue in one of the threads that said if you live monitor plug-ins, the latency is pretty bad. I use a lot of amp modeling with Guitar Rig 2. I don't know what to call the music I right except experimental like Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, or Secret Chiefs 3, so distortion is used frequently.

My computer is pretty top notch. Would anyone be able to add anything else to this topic. Can you suggest an integrated DAW that might have less latency issues?

Thanks again!

Well, latency depends on lots of things. The 1082 shouldn't have much latency issues though. If you monitor live plug-ins, the latency would increase regardless of what interface you're using. Maybe go for a firepod or a motu one.

That's true about latency. I'm just worried about it getting to the point it's nearly impossible to play along with if you leave the plug-ins on. I thought I saw someone say their FW-1082 gets as little as 32ms tops and I think that was for live monitoring one plug-in one track. That's pretty bad if you ask me. I can't remember exactly what my Edirol DA-2496's latency was, but I'd run it with Guitar Rig 2 on 4-tracks and it was fine. Virtually no latency. I think the CPU would get up to about 15-18%. It's been a while though so I don't remember specifics.

I don't know, I guess the real question is; reformat hard drive back to XP so I can use my beloved DA-2496, or stay with Windows x64 and upgrade the PCI sound card and hope it works as good as my DA-2496 did, or go with the integrated firewire interface and risk severe latency issues....

How much of a difference with Windows x64 and Sonar x64 vs. Windows XP and Sonar 5 is there? Anyone know? If it's a big difference I guess I'll stick with the x64, if not, I'll go back to what I know works.

Thanks for the help, yet again!
