Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my first setup ever working. I have an AKG condenser mic plugged into a Tascam fw-1082. The mixer plugs into my Dell Vostro 1520 (Intel Core duo cpu T6670 @ 2.2Ghz and 3 GB of RAM) via a PCI express firewire adapter capable of up to 400mb/s. I'm using Cakewalk Sonar, and I'm having difficulties getting the mixer to interface with the software. I've downloaded all of the necessary plugins for my computer, but I'm still having trouble. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with a similar situation. I'm wondering whether its because of the standard IDT High Definition Audio Codec that comes with the laptop. Do I need an external sound card? Any suggestions would be helpful.

thanks!

Welcome to the wonderful world of recording! All the late nights pulling your hair out, cursing at your computer, trying to get things to work!!

Anyway, your Tascam should work wonderfully. First thing is you need to use ASIO drivers. Go into your control panel and turn off the internal soundcard. The Tascam is your soundcard. Make sure you have the drivers for the Tascam loaded which will also be ASIO drivers.

Once that's done, you need to go into Sonar under Audio and poit it at the Tascam. Then set the inputs you will be using (where the mic is plugged in)Best thing to do is to go to the Sonar/Cakewalk site and look for the tutorials on the forum. Will walk you right through.

One more thing, how will you listen. Do you have monitors or headphones. Remember these come out of the Tascam because that is now your soundcard

Have fun!.

Thanks for the advice Washburn.

I have everything connected correctly but I'm still not getting any sound from the mic. I've tried setting the input to "Stereo FW1082 Analog 1:2, and cakewalk has audio running but there's no sound and I see no waves. The driver currently installed for the tascam recording/playback is made by Frontier Design Group, LLC. Can you tell me a little more about these asio drivers? Do I need a specific one, or can it be general.

thanks.

Asio drivers are used for audio interfaces instead of the standard WDW drivers. Nothing to worry about right now, other than it is the best for your use.

It is difficult to help not knowing what you have set etc. I found this PDF about using the FW1082 with Sonar. Why not start with this:
