I wonder if they're getting ready to fold up their tent? Haven't seen a lot of new product from them in the last few years.

I'd better order that eprom chip Monday.

What's the "eprom" chip ? Just wondering ..

eeprom-electrically erasable programmable read-only memory

It's what holds the OS in the 788.

Current Version is 2.02

If you have version 1.10 or later, upgrade via CD.

If your version is before 1.10, you'll need to order the eeprom.

Ok, thanks .... Btw, I always thought the 788 was one of the better digital "stuffs" that TASCAM put out.

They can produce very good quality recordings. Dan, do you have a 788?

Mine's v.1.05, it really needs an update, plus a new and bigger hard drive.

Still, it's a great machine and serves my needs well. I'd jump ship and go with a Yamaha but I don't want to go through the learning curve again. Also, I like working in Sound Forge so an onboard burner isn't much use to me other than to save tracks.

Hell Yeah, It's still agreat machine!

philboyd,

I did the 80 gig hard drive upgrade at the same time I installed the v2.00 chip. The whole process took about twenty minutes and that includes firing it back up and going thru the qwick format to get the the 4-16 gig partitions. (formating was really fast, about two minutes and you're ready to record.)

What I found in using the wav import/export was, I wasted a lot of the 80 gig hard drive space in the 788 because I'd pull the tracks into the PC for mixing and mastering and then could delete songs in the 788. SOOOOO, I put a 40 gig drive in the Tascam and moved the 80 gig to the computer. This really works great for me.

BTW, I am not upgrading CEPro2 to Adobe Audition, but I am going to upgrade SoundForge 6 to Sony SF 7. The way I figure it, Adobe sux enough $$$ out of me with PhotoShop upgrades.

No, that's not exactly what I meant ... I just thought, from having briefly "played" with the 788 in the past, and read about it, that it had a very cassette portastudio like intuitive operation and that its main thing was to be easy to operate and sound good. It was definitely all that. I just prefer analog though, but it's nothing against the 788 though. Then TASCAM went the Pocketstudio 5 way, not to mention the MF-PO1 & Porta02mkII, and all things good about TASCAM went all to shit. (No offence meant to the people who bought the PS5).

Thanks for the info. I figure 40-60 gigs is enough for my 788, what brand did you get?

Upgrading from SoundForge 6? Geez, I'm still using SF 5.

I did the same thing. The hard drive space makes much more sense to me in my PC. I left a 40GB HD in my 788 and I'll probably never fill it up. It doesn't make sense to back up everything on the 788 disc because it is less efficient than a PC.

Well I just emailed them to try and order a new chip, bet they get right back to me eh?

It is amazing that there is no phone number to contact them on their web site. This is either a major oversight or the wave of the future as companies continue to eliminate traditional customer communication.

I did find a phone number under the jobs listing links and also noted a position available for a senior electronics engineer.

I guess someone there had enough.

Our 788 owners' manuals list the customer service phone number as: 323-726-0303

Of course, the person that helped me upgrade my 788 was completely incompetent. Somehow, though, it worked to my advantage. He told me I'd need a disc to upgrade from 2.0 to 2.02, and then proceeded to send me a new eprom anyway. I had gotten an eprom to go from 1.07 to 2.0 previously.

If pricing still holds true 29.99 for upgrade + 25.00 deposit .

Deposit returned when old eeprom is sent back.

worth it.

Didn't "Cash-scam" respond to someones email here claiming they'd have their bbs forums back up by early Oct.???

Hmm. They can revolutionize the world of home recording, but can't get a bbs sorted out... Interesting.

Ohhhh, early Oct. 2007!

"Cash-scam" .. I like that :D . Tragedy is that it's true. Did you see that now all they have for "contact" info is an email form ? Pathetic. I wish someone would put them out of their misery.

Daniel

It seems little by little they're putting themselves out of misery Dan.
