Hi all,

I'm new, but have joined in the hopes of getting help. I play in an old-man rock band - hobby, charity, lots of outdoor venues. My digital recording experience is limited to running a small home studio using my MAC and Garage Band and an M-Audio Firewire interface.

So here's the deal. Recently our band picked up a Yamaha MG24/14 mixer and we're micing or DIing everything to get better control over our sound. Works great, except for this one deal. Up to now, we've recorded our shows for critique purposes using a TASCAM DR-1 just set out and using the built in mics.

Now we're trying to take a balanced stereo feed of 16 mic preamp channels from the "record-out" section of the board into the TASCAM. Results are horribly distorted, yet when I import to Garage Band for editing, nothing is clipped. When I go into edit mode, the signal looks like one big, dense magic marker but running tightly along the 0db line.

The TASCAM isn't mine, but my guess is we don't have it set at high enough definition. I think they have it set to 16 bit .wav, which is the factory default setting. I know it will do 24 bit .wav or MP3 files between 32 and 320 kbps.

So what's the problem do you think and what should we do?
I can check back, but you could also send answers to bobcraw11@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks in advance.
