Speaking only on behalf of the MIXER the DM24 is a GREAT MIXER whether you use the HD24 or any other Hard Disk Recorder.

Are you using the DM24? I'll agree it is a great looking board. Well constructed. Looks like it belongs in Pro setup. I like the built in talkback feature. Seems to me it would be great paired up with the hd24. Not a bad combination for the price.

Yes, I USE the DM24 along with my MACKIE MDR24/96 (this is why I said it works as well with the ALESIS HD24) it's not that much of a difference.

I love the onboard ROUTING, BUSSING, and EFFECTS & EQ's, but I dont fully RELY on it, I have OUTBOARD gear also, I never really for 1 unit to do EVERYTHING -- but for what I paid for this board its the best thing close to PRO your gonna get.

The talkback function is cool (NOT THAT I USE IT) but I guess
other things grab me , like the : AUTOMATION Features, EQ's, EFFECTS, ease of use, the MIC PRE in the board are cool, though not the greatest but will get you by (Once again I have OUTBOARD tube gear) so that would be irrelevant to me, but just to let you know.

But yeah, the board is kick ass, coming from a MACKIE 32x8 & GHOST board --- this is the last stop for me Unless I get another to connect (hmmmmmm the possibilities)

I have metioned this before on earlier posts, so please excuse me if I repeat myself. I have a very basic set up, One Adat connected to a four buss analog board. I can mix down to either DAT or my computer which I am running cool edit pro. Nothing is hooked up digitally in this setup and I have no automation. Actually I have never used automation of any sort. I feel like I am really missing out. I would love to be able to have at least automation of fader moves. I have thought about getting a VS2480 as it seems like a quick fix giving me Mixer, editing and the automation that I am looking for.. All for around $3000.00.......but I must say that when I look at the VS setting nest to the DM24 ..the vs looks like a toy.

Actually any advice you have is appreciated. I really want to get into a more sophisticated set-up with more tracks and the ability to automate at least the basic components of the mixing process.

I have only about 3000 - 4000 dollars to spend right now.

My thought was to go ahead a get the DM24 and hook it up to my Adat. I would immediatly gain 1. digital connectivity via light pipe. 2. fader automation 3. better pre's than on my analog board. 4. better EQ, better effects etc.

I could work with this setup for awhile, learn the DM24 and eventually move up to another recorder such as the Mackie or Alesis.

You said it best...

simply as you stated is how you should do it.

Just purchase the DM24 it will come with (1) Adat port (so your good for transfer to and from to ADAT) onboard eq, effects, automation as you stated all for around $2200, but for around $4000 you can get the package, normally from MUSICIAN'S FRIEND the MX2424 (24 HD Recorder) DM24, and a mic (not sure which one and monitors.

In all honesty Automation is just recording the moves that you make while the song is playing, so upon playback you wont have to make those moves manually, but before that came along you had to have skill to do it on your own ---- so yes it's great to have, but dont short yourself, in trying it with your mixer as of now, it will have you on a BEGINNING track to mixing properly and learning placement ---- ENGINEERING is a whole other thing for you to learn but it's all

Worth checking it out good luck

Thanks, that makes me feel better. Yeah, it seems to make sense to me (ie., setting up a good quality, powerful mixer like the DM24. as a centerpiece). You mentioned the mx2424, yet you have the Mackie. Should I consider that instead?

I like analog boards. It's really all I know and feel comfrtable with. But I am getting to the point were I feel I could use automated fader moves in the mixdown process. A little hard to keep track of the faders (just 8 right now) can even imigane keeping track of 16 or 24.

It's to your discretion, I only pointed out the MX2424 because they are all under the same name brand TASCAM. Some people are picky, some are no so picky as to say they like keeping all of there gear in the same NAME bracket.

I'm like hell whatever works well and does the best job, and is interchangable with each other --- hell I'm good :D

Matter of fact, I REALLY REALLY wanted the ALESIS HD24, but they were to slack, they stated it was coming out one month and it never did, so I waited, and waited, and waited (looking at my watch) anddddd waited, I'm like I got a CD to finish here so I went and got the MDR24/96. I had an existing ADAT arenal, that's why I wanted it, but I soon traded them for some other gear and never looked back. My DM & MDR are fine and have been since they met.

Thank you for all your help..I agree that the main thing is just finding out what works for you and make music.

Good luck.
