Hey guys, first thread here at this forum. Some of you might know me from AudioKarma and TapeHeads, I'm pretty active in both places. I know my way around analog tape machines of most consumer/semipro sorts, microphones, mixing consoles as far as operation and basic maintenance goes.

So, I got SIX Tascam DA-38's, the RC-898 remote, and a Panasonic SV-3800 for $250. Also, for you video people, i got the TBC for a Sony BVU-850 (getting the rest of the deck from somewhere else) in with the deal. All of it came from a local sound company-Logic sound. Also got sync cables for everything, and two terminators.

Yes I have read The Silent Way's Ultimate DA-88 guide and most of the DA-38 manual, so I am somewhat familiar with basic operations...just enough to make them work. I'll delve deeper into the manual once I dig out my Tascam M-30 and play with wiring one up.

I'll get to the Panasonic in another thread.

The great: the top 3 units work perfectly, and have 150 or less hours.
The bad: the bottom 3 have major issues, and look like they've been cleaned up after being underwater. The bottom 3 do not accept tape. Also cannot bring up hours.

Counting from top:

#4: Record arming works when triggered from RC-898. cannot get to menu. Not responsive to any front panel control
#5: Record arming works when triggered from RC-898. cannot get to menu. Chase is stuck on. Not responsive to any front panel control
#6: Top two rows of LED's on meters are out when the Tascam logo scrolls on startup. Not responsive to remote arming or any front panel control. Error of S Err X1 (X because that part of the display is not working, so it could be a bunch of things).

What I'd like to know is: are the bottom 3 screwed completely? or do I have salvageable machines? If so, how? 24 track DTRS is already a step up from my Fostex E16 (hey, it was free!), but 48 would be epic...

Now for a couple pics: (won't let me post photobucket links until I have 5 posts, so I'll attach)

If you're careful, you can spot: the Crown CX-844, Onkyo P-3060, Lenco L75, Mackie 1202, PreSonus Inspire 1394, Denon AVP-5000, and REALLY INSANE people will know that that's a RCA SoundTape cart machine under the 440 with a box of carts and external speaker atop it.

From our experience with similar machines from the same era (Alesis ADAT's) you would be better off to go with something like a HD24 than three tape-based heads. The ADAT's were great, but transport mechanism issues were a PITA. The hard drives in HD24's are obsolete, but still available, and a clever guy has figured out how to use SATA drives in them.

That said, and knowing it's not answering your questions, I would think the water-damages machines are not worth the trouble or expense.
