Hi folks
This is a heads up to see if there is an interested party out there.
I recently acquired a Tascam 85-16B as part of a larger purchase. It was missing all the audio cards and a few other pieces, but I managed to get hold of everything I needed from someone else, and I already have it working. I am going through a full alignment at the moment.
Now personally I don't need this machine, since I just do transfers here and I have a custom 16 track head assembly on my Ampex MM-1200 to handle this format. So I will shortly be selling the Tascam.
The price will be $1,400 for a fully working machine with heads relapped and aligned by JRF Magnetics, with a written head report.
The price includes the built in dbx unit, the multi-point search to cue unit, and the LA-85 line level adaptor panel, which gives it balanced +4dBm XLR inputs and outputs. All of this makes it a really nice machine!
The search to cue and track arming panel can be used remotely from the machine simply by replacing the included 3' ELCO-90 snake with a longer one (not included).
It will come with a spare capstan, spare spooling motor, and a spare set of the transport servo and logic cards (some working, some not).
It will be aligned to your choice of tape if you send me a reel, else I'll align it to the tape stock I have here, namely Ampex 456 or BASF 911.
Now, if anyone is interested but needs a lower price on the package, here are some options:
Remove the LA-85 line level adaptor (-$100) making it -10dBV RCA unbalanced in and out
Remove the multi-point search to cue (-$100)
No relapping of the heads (-$250)
No head report (-$100)
That could bring it down to as little as $850, although for your own peace of mind I would counsel you not to skip the head report. And although it can just about hold HF tones steady at its full back tension setting of 120gm, I like to operate at a lower tension than that to reduce tape and head wear, but then the edge tracks are wavering due to the wear pattern on the record and repro heads.
So there you have it. There's a little more work to do on it, and I have to unexpectedly go overseas on 8 Sept for approx 10 days, but I should have it ready by the end of the month. I'll post photos then.
I welcome contact from seriously interested parties.
Regards
David
