I am a 50 year old, 'Born-again' teenager, trying to get back into music...after a long time. I am ok around computers, and replacing hard-drives/cd-rom drives/Op systems (I prefer Ubuntu Linux, on all my machines) etc...but a bit of a newbie, when if comes to scsi device connections and stuff like that!
I recently purchased a second-hand Tascam 788 Portastudio (off ebay), that didn't come with a CD Writer, and I am now looking to find a compatible drive for it. A company (on ebay) is selling refurbished Teac CDR56S-600 drives, which I am considering buying. However, as this drive is an internal drive, there is some confusion as to how to connect it externally. Would a standard 50 pin male to 50 pin male scsi cable be sufficient, for all data transfer AND power supply needs? The company concerned is telling me that, as this drive has a 50 Pin Internal (for IDC Ribbon cable), I will need to purchase an extra cable - 30cm SCSI Cable 50Mini D Female (External bulkhead) to 50 IDC Female - to convert to external fitting...as WELL as the male to male cable! Does anyone here know if this is correct, or are they just trying to flog more un-needed product to me? Can anybody please advise whether, 1/ This drive IS compatible with the 788 and 2/ Can I just connect them together, with the standard 50 pin male to 50 pin male scsi cable, and it would work ok? I would appreciate ANY advice/help please! Thanks - Col
