tascam 788 stereo imaging issue?

Hey guys. I just bought a tascam 788 and, although on the whole it's a great machine, i've been having problems when trying record multiple levels of the same stuff. For example, say I do a simple take of a I, V, IV guitar progression on track 1 of the machine, and pan it to left, and then record the same progression again over the top, but recorded to track 2 and panned to the right, i get a really nasty chorus effect (or something) out of the combined tracks, which, despite trying various tricks, such as just copying the file from track 1 to track 2 and staggering the time by 8 or 9ms instead, or experimenting with different degrees of panning and different EQ settings, i just can't get rid of. The overall effect i'm looking for is simply a bigger, fuller guitar sound in sections where such a dynamic is needed. If you can help me fix this problem, or direct me towards another technique for getting this dynamic, i'd much appreciate it.

WOULD RECORDING IN STEREO ON TWO TRACKS AT THE SAME TIME NOT WORK FOR YOU? ID GUESS YOUR LOOKING FOR THE 'LESS THAN PERFECT SYNC. THEN?
 
What he'ds doing sound too complicated when he can record in stereo on one take and double up or add delay to one side to thicken as needed. get me?
 
messsa I got you, and I like your suggestion but i AM going for that 'less than perfect sync' - i've tried the technique I talked about on other machines and it sounded freakin awesome. An incredibly full and natural sound (when coupled with the right mix). putting a delay on the second track (or slightly offsetting the entire thing) doesn't offer the same depth, and rather than being able to pick up details of each track (as each of the two will inevitably have slight variations - a slightly stronger/weaker pick-stroke here and there, for example - these are the natural variations that make it sound so great) all you get is an obvious copy of the same track, no matter how much you chang the eq, or add effects etc. This is a recording technique i use a lot on acoustic-based tracks and if i can't get it to work right on my 788 (as much as i love it) i think i'll go insane
