i have a tascam 788 portastudio and i never got the cd burner to go with it, to put things on cd i have been running coax cables from the monitor out into the mic input of my computer. I was wondering if there is any way to connect it to my computer digitally in sterio. I have looked for tascam software but havent found anything that seemed as if it would work. please help

It really depends on your soundcard. If yours has a coax Digital Input you can hook the 788's digital output directly up to this.

Also, are you really using the soundcards Mic input? Most souncards have a Line Input which should give you better quality. Also, use the 788s Line Out and not the Mon Out

Although I have a CD Burner for mine I only use it for backing up as I use external compression, FX & EQ on my final mixes.

You may have to upgrade to a 24 bit soundcard but it'll be worth it. I use a Soundbaster Audidy2 with live drive...where all the connections are in front. The S/PDIF out on your 788 will work just fine.

under no circumstances buy a soundblaster soundcard. try one of the Maudio or terratec cards. Maudio audiophile 24/96 is a good start. usually go for £50-60 on ebay. you could then connect either the spdif or the stereo line outs of your tascam directly to the to soundcard.

I wondered what software app you are actually recording to on your computer?

If you havent got one i would reccommend some sort of sequencer. For around £100 you could pick up a soundcard and a sequencer like cubase. You could then midi up the 788 to your computer and record two tracks at a time to the sequencer. Then edit and mix in the sequencer which will have better effects and a nice big screen where you can SEE, move cut and generally edit all your tracks with relative ease.

alternatively i'd say buy some software like wavelab. i have an older version and it's still a really good program. You could record a stereo mix from your 788 to wavelab. this would still give you some editing options - although more mastering than mixing.

Good Luck

They've worked fine for me.....and made me a fair amount of money.

I've had excellent results mixing from my 788 into a Delta 44 into Wavlab. For stuff where I need more mixing capabilities, I export to CD and load into Cubase SE, but mixing into Wavlab works just fine with good sound card.
