The all important tip!!!

Read the manual over and over and over.Whan you think you got it read some more. I keep mine in my backpak, and pull it out and read at lunchtime or whenever.

Tascam Portastudios are GREAT.

I've got more than a few of them. I pick up vintage Portastudios and other gear (r-r's, Syncasets & mixers), whenever I can. I'm a vintage Tascam FANATIC.

There's no other thing to using the 688, than to play with it, experiment, and refer to the manual when necessary.

The 688 has a few advanced features, but the Portastudio is a format that's designed to be as easy to use as possible.

I would suggest doing a search here on TASCAM 688 or just 688. Someone posted a step-by-step guide on how to get a signal into the 688. This particular message was indispensible since I didn't get a manual for the 688 from TASCAM until about a month after I bought the damn thing.

Of all the info about a 688 that you need to know, the process of getting signals into the 688 and routed to the proper places is probably one of the most important.

The guy who carries his 688 manual with him is definitely on the right track. I'd recommend that you do the same until you can operate the thing blindfolded.

Most manuals for older products may be purchased from Tascam Parts @ (323) 727-4840.

I've purchased mainly 'service' manuals from Tascam Parts, but I think they may have some vintage 'users' manuals too [reprints].

You may want to call & ask.

I can't find the phone number I had for TASCAM, but the parts department's extension is 840. I ordered a manual back in mid-February and got it about a month later but that was only because they were waiting for a reprint order to come in. So if you want a genuine 688 user's manual, you can get it for around 30 bucks from TASCAM. Good luck!
