Hi I have just bought a Tascam 688 for a bargain price of £75 ($120). I have been reading up on what tapes to use. The sm and sm-x are difficult to source in the UK and the price a bit too steep to get from US. I can get sa-60 for £.81 $1.20 wil I hear a big difference?? Any other people would like to recommend?
Cheers

u can use them, i've heard mixed, some love/hate them. i've only used maxwell or sony's myself over the years. If you can get them for cheap it won't hurt to try.

I've had decent results in the past with TDK SA formulas,...more so with TDK SA-X's
My personal preference would be Maxell XLII-S High Bias Type II's,...Though XLII's can be had for a cheaper price.
I run 60 minute XLII's in my 688's and then mixdown to metal bias Type IV on my mixdown deck.
Enjoy your new 688! Take care of it, and it will treat you well.

thanks for the advice. I've already had her apart for a clean and to address a few issues but I am astounded by this piece of kit.
Since you mention your mixdown deck, I'm looking to replace a technics which has dbx, the deck plays up though. I'm considering dolby s, any thoughts??

funny, your comments came up cause i just got one each sa and sa-x tdk for 50 cents each........can't wait to try them out

I have several "mixdown decks"...but mainly use a Marantz PMD510U, Tandberg TCD 3034, Tascam 122 mkIII.
I do not use the dolby feature on any of 'em. If I was gonna use dolby,..I'd use dolby S.
I think the only deck I might use dolby on once in awhile is my Tascam 238S.

Technics makes some good decks. Why not use the one you have? Is it biased for type II & IV cassettes?

Sometimes when I'm just messin' around, and want some scratch recordings...
I'll hook the mixdown deck up to a 688, set the EQ. and mixdown in real time.
Then you can use some easily obtained type I tapes for scratch. Just a thought...
