Howdy.
So i have a Tascam 688, and terrible things have happened to it. During playback and recording, tracks six and eight have stopped functioning properly. Sometimes, i'll record onto these tracks only to discover upon playback that nothing was recorded- the corresponding meters on the bridge don't light up at all. Sometimes, i'll record onto these tracks but cannot hear them at all during playback. The meter bridge lights up, but the faders do nothing. Turning the effect 1 knobs to pre yields an audible signal, and i've been using them in place of the faders for the time being, albeit without the luxury of EQ. Needless to say, shit's getting old and my recordings are suffering.

I have SOME experience with electronics repair, but if the 688 is difficult to navigate on the outside, i can only begin to imagine the labyrinth of wires, boards, and pots that await me on the inside. I don't know if anyone here has experience with repairing this unit or if anyone has dealt with similar problems, but i would really appreciate any advice or guidance so as to properly diagnose this problem.
I'd love to be able to fix this as cheaply as possible, but the idea of operating on my 688 fills me with apprehension and dread. I'd really hate to screw it up even worse, and that's why sending it to Tascam for a factory re-conditioning seems like the most attractive option, especially when one considers getting it back in pristine, like-new condition; insuring low-maintenance, worry-free operation for years to come.
Has anyone had any experience with having this unit (or any Tascam unit) factory re-conditioned? What were shipping costs like? What was malfunctioning? What was the end cost? Was the unit really "like new"?
ANY information regarding Tascam factory re-conditioning would be EXTREMELY useful to me. Thanks in advance.
