Tascam 58 - capstan turning in the wrong direction (after heatwave)

Hi y'all,

So the weirdest thing happened today with my 58. After using it a lot during the past months with no issues whatsoever, this morning I turned it on, left for 30 minutes or so, came back to dump a couple of tracks on it and it did not want to go into play mode, it stopped immediately. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the capstan itself is turning clockwise!! This makes absolutely no sense to me, did somebody ever come across that kind of issue? Overheating maybe? It gets pretty hot where I am at this season. The capstan on my TSR8 runs correctly counterclockwise (I've checked just to make sure I wasn't crazy...).

Thanks, as always.

The capstan motor is DC and runs from a frequency generator - so this suggest a fault on this board - the output is driving the motor the wrong way. Synchronous motors tend to be one way, but DC ones can go both directions. Sadly, a real fault.

Thank you very much ! Just for general curiosity, do you reckon that overheating might be a cause for this sudden change of direction ?

It is possible I suppose, but if you can get hold of the schematic for the board that drives the capstan, that might reveal something?
