Tascam 564 'record error problem'

Wonder if anybody can help me?
I have a Tascam 564 and records fine on one track but when laying down other tracks (overdubbing) it will stop and show 'record error' the machine will freeze up and I need to switch of at the power cable. There is no logic to when it will do this but is very frustrating. Is there a way to put the machine back to 'factory setting' ? or is there another way to solve the problem. I have no user manual as the machine was purchased second hand.
Many thanks
JockStrat

do you have multiple mini-discs?, seems to me this could be a problem with your media...eg there are some bad sectors on the disk and it's causing the machine to freeze when it tries to write to them. Not sure if this helps but it's all I can think of.

Tascam 564 'Record Error'

Hi Duddy Guy
I am using Sony MD discs and if I've recorded to the disc I have tried erasing all data from the the disc before trying to record but still getting the Record Error at times. If you think it's the discs rather than the machine I would be happy to order new discs. I didn't want to do this at £12 a time as I thought it was the Tascam rather than the discs.
Thanks
JockStrat

yeah I'm not really sure... that was just the first thing that struck me, if you are getting the same error from multiple discs though it's probably not the issue

Man, you lucked out. I got my 564 last month, and I can't even record on one track to begin with. Check the following link. The part where it talks about damage occurring during shipping makes sense to me. Mine came over land from South Carolina to British Columbia. That's one long road trip.

As soon as I put the disc in, the machine switches to MIDI sync mode, but I don't think it's supposed to. Also, the "ready to record" LEDs only light up when there is no disc in the drive. Anything I try to record does not end up on the disc, and after a minute or so of trying to record, I get a "REC ERROR" message. Does any of that sound familiar to you?

send me your email address, and i'll send you the manual.
I own (2) 564's,..they are very sensitive machines.
I have the same problem with one of them,..but only happens with "used" discs. Try using a brand new disc. also, look into getting the laser lense cleaned. If your recorder took a good fall,..that could be a major prob.

All the discs are brand new. Maybe too new? The manual says to use the 140MB disc, but mine are different. The guy who sold it to me included them and he insists that he tested the unit, and it worked perfectly.

By the way, if anyone needs the manual, I got it for free at http://safemanuals.com/user-guide-instructions-owner-manual/TASCAM/564%20PORTASTUDIO-_E.

I've spent $240 so far to get the thing into my home, so I might as well pay a little more for repairs. I've read nothing but good things about the 564.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to record with my 564 yet, so I'm wondering: Do any of you have some recordings online that you've made with the 564? I'd love to hear how it sounds.

What kind of discs did you get with the 564?....because you can't record on a "standard" minidisc,...it must be a MD DATA disc.

...I don't have ant recordings posted yet,...but,.. I will let you know soon, when I do post them. Don't give up on your 564 yet,...I've gotten some KILLER recordings with both of my 564'S .

I look forward to hearing those.

The discs I have are "Hi-MD compatible", made by Sony. They can record standard audio, or up to 305 MB of data. One of the discs had already been opened, so I think that's what the previous owner used to test the unit. But as I've read, it's not uncommon for the disc drive to slip out of alignment during shipment. Not surprising, considering the distance travelled.

You definitely need to use the 140mb MD data discs,...you can only get 5 songs per disc,...or about 37 minutes(1 song)..(if you have a song that long)....but, yeah, the drive on one of my machines has a "slipping" in it,..sometimes, I have to unscrew it and take the thing apart to get the disc out, when it doesn't eject properly. Either, I'll do that, or (a little trick I learned) where i'll take another MD DATA disc and push it against (slightly) the one that is stuck in the machine, when powering up and ejecting at the same time.
The 564 is probably hands down one of my favorite recorders, despite all the GLITCHES, from unproper handling. I do have one that works FLAWLESSLY though.:D
I do believe that it says somewhere in the manual, that you can play "standard minidiscs" (2-tracks consumer)on the 564,..but to record, tracks you will need MD DATA discs (the kind with the floppy type outer covering)...which are expensive.

Damn right they're expensive. I've been looking at those on ebay. I was thinking of buying one just to see if it magically worked. But if what you're telling me is true then I'll have to buy them anyway, and not just one. Until then, at least I can use my 564 as a mixer.

Minidisc-based units. These operate on what are basically small re-recordable CDs, but all of them use data compression to some degree (called ATRACS, and now past its 4th generation). The advantage is price and media removability/sturdiness. Earlier units had poorer compression algorithms and sound distinctly worse. Most of these units are 4-tracks, though Yamaha now has an 8-track on the market. Warning: multitrack Minidiscs use Data Minidiscs, which are much more expensive and harder to find than the audio Minidiscs used by ordinary inexpensive (~$300) stereo Minidisc recorders.

That's an optimistic way to look at it!:D
and, a decent mixer it is!...excellent sweepable mids.

yes i agree,..I have one in the "bedroom studio" for electronic music, and one at "the practice spot" for the band. also, have a ton of gear everywhere else in the house because there is no more room in the "bedroom studio",..you can go on my profile to check out some pics.
