I AM A NEWBIE...I JUST BOUGHT A TASCAM 564,I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT,BUT I COULD NOT PASS IT UP FOR THE PRICE.I AM HAVING ALOT OF FUN LEARNING,BUT I AM NOT A STUDIO MUSICIAN.I CAN NOT GET THE QUALITY SOUND I WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE,AM I EXPECTING TOO MUCH OUT OF WHAT I HAVE ,OR DO I NEED TO GET BETTER MUSICIANS.ANOTHER STUPID QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED ORDER FOR RECORDING SONGS,DRUMS,BASE RYTHM GUITAR???
THANKS.

Hi Dan
I have a 564 and mostly like it, though a few features I don't like. Although some day I want 8 or 16 tracks, the 564 was priced right for my current budget.

When you say that you're not getting the quality of sound that you want - what exactly do you mean? For one thing, the 564 does NOT have any on board effects, so your recordings will sound very dry, so you need to run your stuff through some type of reverb unit. Also, you might want to look into a tube preamp for the vocal mics. I've recorded without one, but the vocals sound more professional with a good tube preamp. But I've recorded several tunes for radio jingles on the 564 with no complaints.

As far as the order of recording, you need to get a good rhythmic base first. Record a click track from a drum machine or metronome to help record your rhythm guitar or maybe a rhythm keyboard part first. This will keep your rhythm steady. Then add the bass, drums and leads and vocals. Good Luck!!

THANKS ,MUTT.

I appreciate your reply to my questions.I do have an effects unit ,I just got it actually ,it has improved my recordings 100%.I also had a problem getting md discs that will record 4 trax but I found out that I was buying the wrong ones.I guess you just have to learn from your mistakes.I am now going to add to my studio a little three things i am considering,
1-compressor/limiter
2-tube preamp.
3-cd burner.
I'm not sure which is the next step, but i think I can wait on the cd burner ,I have a good tape deck that works for now.I think I should consentrate on getting the best sound that I can for now.

thanx again.....

Good choices Dan
You could wait on the CD burner since you have the tape deck. Also, you might want
to put a condenser mic (maybe a Rode Nt1) on your list for your vocals.

Happy Recording

Dan.O,
Just a note to encourage you with your new machine . . I got my 564 about a year ago and love it though I haven't used it quite as much as I had fantasized before getting it. Recently I've started putting some of my songs down again and hope to start using it for at least a couple hours a day. My son is quite a guitarist and composer in his own right and we have had ( and will have ) some real good times in the "digital dungeon". Once again have a great time with it and while I'm no expert maybe if you have any questions we could work it out together.

Musically,
Songman
