I recently brought an old tascam 488 without a manual.

Does anyone have a manual that I can download / photocopy?

Check down a few threads from yours and you will see the same need for a 488 manual -- read and you will find the way to get a copy of the 488 manual. The difference between the MKII and earlier models is slight so either manual will get you in gear.
