Well it got here. 488MKII
They were right it WAS in mint condition.
A beutiful unit.
Until I saw where they dropped onto the concrete.
The back right side was Cracked on the bottom.
Even after that solid concusion, the mixer section still
worked great, Fast forward and rewind also.
But no play or record functions.
UPS >>>>>BITE ME

What can brown do for you???

Dude, sorry.

Open 'er up and check the belt.;)

was it insured? did you tell delivery guy you are signing but mark it as box damaged?

Hey All....Thanks for the Good advise
I got it Friday and had been basicly afraid to even turn it on because It's been years since I have messed with this stuff and know how obsessed that I get when I do.
But I had to check it out before the 3 day limit on the return expired.
Yeah It was fucked. The bubble wrap looked like a woman had packed it.
OH Yeah It was.
I would have jammed it big time with Foam out the Ass.
She said she saw it packed and was going to run UPS thru the mill.
I didn't say anything BECAUSE I WANT MY MONEY BACK.
I have sold 60 Pound JBL PA heads with in the last 2 months that had enough foam around them that I could have dropped it off of the house and nothing would have been damaged!
Anyway here is the unit that was trashed:

Here is the unit that just bought to replace it with:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160156789464&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11

I'll vouch that the 488mkII is a fine machine that sounds good & is exciting to use.

The second "replacement" unit looks a lot cleaner than the first one.;)

Yeah man, I've had that happen with an Alesis ADAT once (when I first thought I'd try Digital-what a mistake) and it just wasn't meant to be!!.....UPS damaged the Unit , broke the LED screen and although the shipper filed a claim never got a refund, and as He was thinking it probably , most likely wasn't going to happen anyway, so he gave up, but was cool enough to refund half my money.......Which was super cool of him too! He could have screwed me because I didn't request extra insurance at first anyways. But At least I got 2 rca cable snakes out of it for my other half of the money and, I'm now using for my analog setup!......... we both lost out though....bummer... Thumbs down to Ups for that one.
A

Hey UPS hauled off their first Fu*kup today
Now I'm waiting to see what USPS can do to the best 488MKII that I've seen.
As far as Digital goes I had a brand new Tascam788 and wouldn't even mess with it .
I don't need all of that spin the Magic wheel JAZZ.
I sold it for 50 cents on the Dollar.
BYE BYE

I heard about a studio that sent their ADAT for a service and when the courier brought it back he accidentally reversed over it!

My day job is in distribution and I've seen how some couriers treat fragile items. Frankly I'm amazed there aren't more breakages. There's a certain printer manufacturer that decided to save money by ditching the shipping pallets on some of there large format printers and actively told the couriers to DROP them off the back of the truck because they are too heavy to be lifted by hand!

Funnily enough the UPS are one of the most reliable I've dealt with but I guess everyone messes up once in a while

About 10 years ago I signed up at a local employment agency for some extra work around Christmas. They told me to be at UPS at 2 O'clock in the morning.
I didn't know where it was and couldn't find it because the fog was so thick you couldn't even see your hand infront of your face.
I finally found it and was a half hour late.
So I didn't even let em know I was there and left.
But what they were doing was they had a guy in the truck, another guy at the back of the truck, and two more guys 15 feet apart with the last one at a conveyor belt.
They were bucket brigading the packages NFL style.
Throwing the boxes in the air to each other as fast as they pick'em up.
HAHAHAHAHA

That's at all of the couriers. When I was at DHL, I saw stuff that truly mortified me. At least UPS and FedEx have "teams" to unload and load the trucks. I and my fellow drivers had to sort AND load our trucks by ourselves. I'll leave it up to your imagination how Christmas season frustration was an increasing factor when you load your own truck without help.

I have to use one a those Sunday morning newspaper baggies

I have been trying to find out what years they Started and Stopped production on the 488MKII units. I can't seem to locate the Serial number correlation to any Dates on The Tascam website or Google.
This unit that I found on Ebay is just like new. Meaning the heads look like they have never been close to a Cassette tape and I can't find a single trace of dust anywhere.
Serial number 0530033.
I can't beleive I got so lucky. $188 shipping and all.
WOW WOW WOW

Just a quick "heads -up" on shipping..... Our fed ex rep came to observe how we pack the guitars and other equip. we ship. We were having a lot of claims. He basicly told us that because their weight limit was 200 lbs., we had to pack things with the understanding that other packages weighing 200lbs. could be stacked on top of them. As far as marking packages with "Fragile" or "this end up" The drivers are pretty much instructed to ignore it. When I ship something fragile, I always use a box within a box with plenty of packing material in between.

It's all about packing, guys, and sad to say but most simply don't know how to pack right and by that I mean for a heavy piece of electronics to survive repeated 5 - 6 foot drops, regardless of what it says on the box or what it contains. That is the MAIN reason I don't shop on eBay anymore, where something needs to be shipped. I look for local deals. The rate of damage is much higher than advertised and there are various degrees of damage, with some that you can't really tell from the outside. A tape deck or mixer, for example, can appear ok but internally may have broken or loose parts. I see it all the time. And if you think that shipping in the original factory box will completely protect a mid to heavy item, then you're mistaken. They were never meant to be shipped like that but rather as part of a series of same type products strapped to a pallet or skid and sent freight (forklifted, placed onto truck or container etc..), which made it much safer.

I contacted UPS.
They came and picked it up.
Shipped it back to Ohio.
I got my money BACK.
I found another 488MKII that is JUST LIKE NEW.
For $80 less than I paid for the Cracked Version.($188 total)
This guy Knew how to pack Sensitive Electronics.
Since then I've bought a new SM57>New MXL V57M>
Like New Lexicon MX200>New Epiphone Acoustic>
I found a used Snare Drum with Cymbal and stands for CHEAP
I bought a New Bass Drum Pedal.
This is what is killer
I found a PLASTIC 55 gallon Barrel that just sounds fantastic for a Bass Drum.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
That long Tube lends it's self to some great Acoustic qualities.
I'm surprised bass drums aren't longer than they are.
My next move is going to be a Epiphone EB-3
That may take while $ but It's NEXT
