I left my 488 on all weekend by mistake and now when I use record with it, the longer I use it the slower the speed gets. After turning it off for a while it then plays back at a faster speed, making it very difficult to add tracks in tune. My question is How much is this going to set me back to get repaired?? any clues?

I can't believe out of all the people here, no one has ever had need of a repair or service. No one here can give me an Idea of what a service would cost me??? My 488 is an older one with the two trim controls instead of the newer 4 trims.
I am thankful for Any help.

Not sure how much it will cost, but it sounds like a servo problem (the ones that drive the captsans). I have the old 488 as well, and occasionaly after several hours of mixing, constant playback and rewinding, the tape speed gets jittery on me. It chills out if I power it down and let it rest, though. Try http://www.tascam.com, in their coustomer support page - it will give listings of local tascam servicers in your area. An email to one of them can give you a ballpark on a repair estimate without actually examining the consloe. Good luck, and let me know what you find out.

Yeah, I had already been to the Tascam site got the service area repair centers, the first 3 numbers I called were out of service, make's you wonder doesn't it???
It seems the labor would run around $30 to $65 and depending on the motor's that need to be serviced (replaced!) that would be $35 to $100. My speed doesn't get jittery, in fact the only way you would know it's slowing down or after a rest speeds up, is when you try to add a track and your no longer in tune with the previous tracks. but I do appreciate your response. I don't really have the money at this time to put into a repair so I guess I'll have to keep using the pitch control to try and stay in tune. Sometimes the speed varies too much for even the pitch control, what a pain.....
Thanks again.
