My Tascam 424 is turning too fast! The tapes spin at a higher speed which is somehow causing there to be no recording or playback.
The history is that last year we hadn't been using it for a few months because it sounded noisy. So we cleaned the heads and rollers and demagnitized the heads. My wife recollects that we didn't have the Tascam unplugged when we demagnitized but if was definetly switched off. We checked it immeditately after and it seemed to be working fine.
A couple of months later which was after the new year we tried to use it again to see if there were any Y2K problems. While in "play" the tape was running at an unusually fast rate and no sound would come out. As a means of re-initializing the Tascam we tried it in record mode and that did reset it so that then everything seemed to work except that the pitch was correct at the zero setting. I would try to adjust it to a new spot where the frequency sounded normal but it kept changing everytime after I would rewind or fast forward.
Then we tried to use it again a couple of months later and it went back to the tape turning at a fast speed again and putting it in "record" doesn't reset it anymore.
We (my wife who is a singer songwriter and I, her husband) are lost. Is this a Y2K related problem or is it due to not being careful enough demagnitizing - could not unplugging cause this? Is there a run away motor or bad belt or gear? Does it just need some kind of cleaning or maintenance? Is there a servicing that will take care of my problem? What should servicings cost? Are there servicing kits?
My background is that I have worked some in electronics in aerospace but have not really done much with audio equipment.
My wife and I would appreciate you help!
