I recently started using the 424. I recorded on tracks 1-3. Then bounced all three down to track 4. Then re-recorded on tracks 1-3. I then try and mix down all four tracks onto another cassette deck but when i listen to that tape it sounds like it only has received a signal from tracks 1 and 2. What am I doing wrong?

Are you sure that you're routing all 4 tracks to the main mix (i.e., "tape") when you're bouncing down?

In what deck are you listening to the mixed version?

What deck are you mixing to?

When I bounced tracks 1-3 down to 4 I had tracks 1-3 on their center TAPE position. When I am mixing down I have tracks 1,2,3,and 4 in their center TAPE position. I am using a JVC TD-W254 double cassette deck (found in the basement). I then tried to play the tape in a couple cassette players. The only signal the mixed down cassette is getting is from tracks 1 and 2 (bass and vocals). Tracks 3 and 4 (back-up vocals and the bounced down tracks of 1,2,3) are not present on the tape.

There's a switch on the backside (between aux send and chinch outs) for switching between tape individual outs and stereo-mix-out/sync
If it's in individual out position, chinch output 1+2 are playing back tracks 1+2
Maybe that's the problem

Do you have the manual for the unit? If so, I'm assuming you followed the procedure outlined for mixing down, correct?

Did you run out the line out jacks from your 424 to the tape machine? There's a switch on the back of the 424 that says "tape out" or "line out." My suspicion is that you have yours set to "tape out," in which case the L/R (white/red) jacks function as tape out jacks for tracks 1 and 2 (see the numbers below the jacks) instead of Line Out jacks for the main mix.

Looks as though Dr. Spring beat me to the punch. :)

I sea a switch. The options are tape out or sync out. Tellin me to switch it to sync out? I had it on tape out.

OOOOOOOOOH. Just had an "ah-ah" moment. Saw the "sync" did not see the "line out". So you are saying flip that switch so it is on "Line Out". OK. Do I use the usual red/white RCA cables?

Yes, flip it to line out and run the cables from the L/R (white/red) jacks.

When it's in "line out" mode, those white and red jacks (which say "L" and "R" on top and "1" and "2" on bottom) function as the L/R main mix. But when in tape mode, they function as outputs for tracks 1 and 2 only, hence your problem.

The "tape out" option is useful if you wanted to use an external (more full-featured) mixer to mix the tracks. It just sends the signal of each track through its respective 1, 2, 3, or 4 jack (the numbers below the jacks). You could also use this to dump all four tracks into a computer DAW if you wanted to mix in the box.

Anyway, that should solve your problem. Good luck!
