hey y'all,
Been fooling around with my newish Tascam 424, and tonight as I was playing some acoustic guitar into a dynamic & listening through headphones. As I was playing, I heard some popping noises that seemed to be escalating. I turned off the machine, and turning it back on I found it humming and it wouldn't convey signal from the inputs - no mic, no guitar through the 1/4 inch jack. Doesn't playback or show a level coming in.

Playing back tapes it has a prominent hum, with the taped material at a barely, barely discernible volume, sounding very weird.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Ideas? Is my tascam junked already (say it ain't so)?

Your input is appreciated, thanks.

Did you plug mono pair of headphones in it at any time?
This could cause problems.

Nope, no mono head phones being used. I was using Grados and a converter for the jack.

Now it's taking inputs again, but the playback exhibits a warbling noise when I first turn it on. It records tracks, but shows an intermittent popping sound - akin to the one that started this whole trouble.

I switched out headphones and converters, no avail. I think this may be the headphone jack? Possibly just the electronics themselves.

anyways, any more thoughts would be appreciated
thanks

Hello,

I’m not sure if this is the right forum topic but if think it’s close.

If there is one that is more appropriate, please redirect me.

Several years ago I bought a TASCAM 424 MK III PortaStudio 4 Track Cassette Recorder. I never used it.

This morning I took it out of the box for the first time.

I followed the instructions in the owner’s manual.

I see the meter moving in playback but I hear nothing in the headphones. I am probably missing or misunderstanding one of the steps.

Is someone familiar with this machine or is there some way that I can contact support for this product?

If so, how?

First off is the headphones monitor knob turned up?
Also there should be a switch that says effect2/tape cue.
Make sure it is on the effect2 setting.
Also....make sure the mic line/off/tape switch at the top of the channel is set to tape if you want to hear playback
