Hello, I recently acquired an original Tascam porta studio 424 for $20 from a garage sale for the purpose of using the pitch shift knob and tape speed switch with incoming sound. However, the porta studio didn't come with an adapter. I tried using my Linksys routers 12 volt ac adapter (120vac 60Hz 100mA input / 12V dc 500 mA out with -__•__+. I know that the Tascam 424 first edition calls for a 1100 mA adapter, but my unit won't even turn on, I bought it at a garage sale, and I'm about to toss in the trash. I'm willing to buy a third party power supply from eBay, but I'm not sure if the risk of paying for an adapter for a dead product is worth it.

You might want to try a automotive battery or 12 vdc battery charger to see if the unit does a basic power up before
investing in a 3rd party supply. I would put a 1 amp fuse inline if you decide to test it with a battery in case the unit
has a internal short.

The 500ma Linksys transformer is underpowered and is probably dropping to much voltage to even run a basic test.

I am wondering why the MKII is listed as well as it has an internal powers supply, no wall wart.

It's a drop-shipping operation. No one there has ever laid eyes on a 424. If the website has automated product data import, they've probably never laid eyes on that page either.

Also, the original 424 power supply is a bit more substantial than that one. Rather than a tiny wall wart, it has a big box that sits on the floor, with the DC lead coming from one end and the mains lead coming from the other end. Gotta wonder if the filters and voltage regulation are up to snuff on that one.

Oh hell. Dragon said the original power supply was a wall wart. He mentioned it being too heavy and falling out of the wall socket. The one I saw on Ebay must have a replacement supply.
