Tascam 414MKII 4-Track Recorder

That's $100 less than I paid for my 414 back in '97. Mine is the same except it doesn't have the XLR's on the back.

They are a handy & fun tool. Great to learn the basics too. I used to use mine mainly as a songwriting scratchpad and to record my old band's shows. One mic above the drummer, one in front of each guitar and a line off the PA and it was good enough to hear what we were doing.

You can make submixes onto a VCR or another tape deck and open up more tracks. As long as you don't expect it to compete with RTR or HDD setups you'll get good results. For that price you can't beat it.
 
I love it. I have two of them, and have produced two CDs that I'm pretty proud of. It is very useful and if you use the DBX, you can get really good recordings. You have to be careful about levels, noise, and all other things like thagt, but if you are careful, it should make very good recordings for you.
