Hi all, I am new to the forum and have enjoyed alot of reading already. I have aquired a Tascam 414 mkii and it seems to do pretty well with my first sit down and play time but I'm wondering if I goofed somehow if if I can save a tape.

In first setting it up I layed down a backup music disc and some vocal. Made some change and rewound and recorded. After playing around I felt I was close to putting down a full take. Well it went down pretty good but when playing it back I can hear the first tracks I layed down.

I have tried to erase the complete tape but can't seem to erase some of the first tracks. It seems like the culprit is on channel 4 but not sure.

So question is can I get the tape ereased completely or do I need to try a new tape.

Thanks in advance.

Dad

Are you using the correct type of tape? I have had this years ago when someone recorded on one of my tape decks using metal tape, and that particular deck did not have a metal bias setting.

Also check that the erase head is clean.

Alan.

Thanks for your input. I will check the tape type and pick some new ones up tommorrow. I did have some stuff on tracks one and two and three that erased but there is still some stuff coming through. I can't find where it is. I will start over tommorrow with some new tapes though.

I think I seen where TKD tapes are best.

Thanks Dad.

I am also a new Porta Studio 414 MK11 owner (yard sale) and I have just cleaned it. Records and plays great EXCEPT there is hum on both channels 3 and 4. Can anybody help with some techno talk? Much appreciated.

...

OP has to make sure he's using the Tape Cue section to listen back to previous tracks, and not a combination of the "Tape" channel-select function with the "Buss L/R" assign section.

Any inadvertent routing of "Tape" to "Buss L/R" during overdubs will create an inadvertent track-bounce to the new track.

Make sure you're using either the Genuine Tascam PS-414 power supply, or a properly rated replacement power module.

Reel Person , thanks for your input. I did finally figure that out. I also put the tape in my mix down recorder and erased everything on both sides and got the tape working. Now I must get back to working with it. Thanks much.
