Hey,

I just bought another tascam 388 after opening it up and finding a gooey belt. I replaced that and still no dice concerning the rewind, play, fast foward function of the machine before I replaced the belt the machine play light would at least turn on. Now the play light, DBX light, Vari/Fix/Ext light, load light won't turn on; while the repeat light still comes on and counter display is on fixed at 00:00. I looked at the fuses they all appear alright nothing obvious looks blown. Anyone have any idea of what could've happened? I did take basic things apart while cleaning the machine but nothing got slammed or anything like that?

I'd like to fix myself considering the closest guy that'll work on it is two hours away and this is a back up unit not my main machine.

Thanks

Something I'll bet is disconnected or not seated properly. For those functions to work before belt change and not now indicates something tied to your working on it.

I looked around underneath the tape machine I couldn't find anything that was obvious that was unplugged I wonder where the control panel plugs into

I dont know, never owned one. Best I can do is keep your thread up top. Maybe those familiar with this machine will pipe in soon.

It seems as some of our more knowledgeable members are currently mia.

When I bought my 2nd 388, it wasn't working as stated in the ad. When it was plugged in, none of the lights on the control panel lit up. Not even the digital tape counter.
I looked underneath the control panel and saw a resistor that was flopping around. It had a bit of burning around it, but not much. It was loose. So I took the control panel off and re-soldered it and the control panel came back to life.
I eventually swapped that panel out with a spare just incase it was gonna be an occurring problem.
Take a close look at the board under the panel.
Also check all your fuses and replace them if needed.

There are a few small plugs under the control panel. You could try unplugging then plugging back in.

I've unplugged the control panel about 4 times checked everything but nothing fixed it. I wanted to sell this unit but might just be a parts unit as of now.

Are you sure your fuses are good. Sometimes they can look ok but can still be bad. You should check them with a multimeter or just replace them all together.
