Well, in lieu of Sweetbeats' thread regarding throwing in the towel, it sort of gave me a little incentive to finally figure out what it wrong with my Tascam 38. Between some advice from a tech at reelprosoundguys and miscellaneous threads on the forum, I have finally figured out what was wrong with the unit.
Apparently, most 38 owners are aware of the cold solder joints all over the motherboard, and this was exactly the problem. So I sat and re-soldered everything. Apparently there had definitely been some work done to this board over the years, including two connectors that were removed and relocated a set of pins back from the original location... I had to do a lot of solder cleanup, because whoever soldered on this board globbed it on and made a huge mess. For all I know pins were bridging...Not only did it end up fixing the overall problem, but it brought back functionality to a messed-up track 6 and all channels work now in repro mode, whereas they didn't before.
So I'm pretty psyched
I hope it doesn't blow up again!
