Tascam 2488

Does anyone know how this sounds?...could i plug a good mic into this and get a good sound?
 
My 2488 sounds just like my 788, or any other 24 bit uncompressed hard disk recorder........Good.
 
I know a lot of people use the 2488 with good results. However, if you're looking for a good sound from the mic, you might use a dedicated preamp.
 
Agreed, it does have phantom power and internal pres and compression and it's usefull for some situations but overall you're better off with outboard gear.
 
philboyd, I just read your post. It makes perfect sense to me.

BUT, seeing as how the 2488 does not have out jacks for each channel....how do you effect one track with compression, and the the next with eq?

by perfect sense, I mean I agree with the necessity for outboard gear. But how the hell do you accomplish it, track by track?

I think I'm beginning to dislike the 2488 intensely. It is not a user friendly device.

In point of fact, I am curious of the resale value of the unit being approximately one month off the showroom floor.

I find it to be useless and cumbersome. Am I missing something? I think it's a boat anchor for a lifejacket

Most folks don't track with effects other than compression and that's the route Tascam has taken in that options are limited in the interest of having 8 tracks to record at once at 24 bit uncompressed. Later, when mixing and you want a bunch of different internal and/or looped effects in your mix, you'll need to bounce your mixed tracks.

Bottom line though is that I don't think a 2488 or any stand alone recorder is for you.

seriously, the unit has a great sound for certain things.

I'm not one of the vocalist on this project. So, I have yet to experience the dreaded 'sound booth'....

My guitar parts are fine with me. It's everyone else who is unhappy.

back to your quote.....something simpler makes sense to me, since none of us has a clue about the 2488. Including/Particularly the guy who owns it.
