Hey there! A few years ago, I backed up 14 completed songs from my 2488 to my pc. I had to have a new motherboard installed under warranty. The songs show up as a HAYES JT FAX file. Never heard of that. I followed the instructions on page 74 of the manual to a tee. After (drag and dropping) loading 5 songs into the partition I'm working in, the message came up on the screen that there was no more room. Great, I thought......so I closed out and unhooked the usb connection(step 4), dismissed the popup (step 5) pressed menu, DATA BACKUP and the USB RESTORE key. The message: IMPORT FILE NOT FOUND< USE USB OPEN TO IMPORT FILE.
I rehooked up and opened the USB connection, went to "My Computer", found the 2488 as the "G" drive and opened it. There were the 5 songs showing as the HAYES JT FAX files...song# so and so .....
So, then I remembered that the version of the machine that these song files were recorded on was version 1.01. The nice guys at the repair shop gave me an updated version 1.02 upgrade when they repaired it (the 3rd time it was in there).
Is that why the newer version isn't reading the songs?
Is there some download app available for me to get around this?
Or some sort of reader that is available?
AM I simply not doing something correct?
It would save a TON of work of re-recording the songs if there is something available. Thank you all, in advance!! Jim

There is one extra step to a Restore.

After the file is moved onto the FAT partition you have to then move it to the native partition.

This is achieved thru step 6, 7 and 8 in the Restoring section of the manual, page 74 and 75.

Thanks for the reply. I did that exactly, but the message appears after step 6 when I hit USB RESTORE. I get the error message that I stated above.. not the USB RESTORE window like on page 75 at the top. I may be having a problem determining the difference between a FAT partition and a native partition??? I only show 2 partitions going...the one I am working in and another one. What I find confusing is that when I go to page 65 and select the partition that has only "Part 02 1294MB" and hit select, it comes up with a new song. When I go to load song, there is only the newly created song available to load. Why would it say only 1294MB free space and then have nothing in it? I'm puzzled..

The message, Import File Not Found, means there is no backup file sitting on the 2488 FAT partition. The FAT partition in an area on the 2488 hard drive that is used for file transfers, either a whole song or individual wave files. The FAT partition is 4086 MB in size.

The native partition(s) is the area on the disk where the songs sit. Each song contains not only the recorded wave files but also the settings for each channel, all in proprietary 2488 lingo.

When you do a backup, the 2488 makes a file of all that info and places it on the FAT partition. The backup file is a binary file only readable by the 2488.

To restore a backup you should first reformat the FAT partition to open some room for the backup.

But BE CAREFUL and don't reformat any other partitions or you lose all your songs on that partition. Do not use a computer to reformat the FAT, use the 2488.

Once the FAT is free, open the USB connection to your PC and just drag the backup to the FAT, then move it to the native partition.

How big is the backup file?

And HAYES JT FAX is not your backup file. Just google it.

The backup file should look something like SONG023U.001

When you open the USB connection you will see three folders on the 2488:
Backup
SMF
WAVE
These are on the FAT and Backup is where the backup files are swapped.
SMF is for MIDI files and WAVE is for wav files.

Hey there, Manslick!! well, I got it! I wasn't understanding the reform process and I was afraid to hit "yes" when it asked me "are you sure?" I thought I would lose all of my current songs in my active area I was working in. I bit the bullet and hit "yes". I thought I would lose all my work....but I didn't. Also, I didn't realize that when you see the SONG001U.001, etc. icons on the computer desktop after you open the 2488 from "my computer" you have to drag and drop the transferred files from the areaoutside the folders into to the yellow backup folder. Once I did this, and went to USB RESTORE, VIOLA!! There they were and I was able to reload them into my current working area as if they never left! AWESOME!! Can't thank you enough!!

Cool. You should reformat the FAT again so it's clean for your next operation.

But what about the other way...

Cool. You should reformat the FAT again so it's clean for your next operation.

What if you have restored via USB, then all of the sudden you fill up the fat partition, you open the usb on 2488, your computer shows the 3 files, you go into the backup file as usual, and your computer sees no files at all?????
