Hi

Recently I have been having some major problems with my Tascam 2488. The best way I can describe this is sometimes the 2488 goes into this "state" in which all audio, whether being recorded, monitored, or played back either A) suddenly becomes very distorted at normal volume, or B) The audio signal is suddenly reduced to a barely audible high pitched hiss.

Example Senarios:

-I record an audio track about 1 minute long on a single track, while monitoring it everything sounds fine. I play it back now, and about 15 seconds into playing it suddenly becomes distorted and unlistenable.

-Track 1 recorded OK and sounds OK, I am recording on track 2 and suddenly track 1's playback becomes distorted. I play back both and both are distorted.

-I try to monitor an input in the "state" but only after turning all levels up can I hear the slight distorted signal.

-After I am stuck in this distorted "state" I try to load up another song, or even restart the system, but all the tracks play back in the barely audible distorted hiss.

Like I said, usually a restart would make this go away, but recently the only way I can make it stop is leaving the system off for say 30 minutes. When I come back to it, everything will work OK for a few minutes, but it seems that as soon as things warm up, it goes into this distorted "state".. HELP!

I have been unable to find someone with a similar problem. Ever since I bought the unit used (about a year ago) it has done this every once and awhile but it has always gone away after a restart. But today I have spent nearly the whole day trying to get it to work properly and the problem persists. I have tried everything from updates to a factory reset.. but nothing. Is it fried? Any Advice?

Hey there! I had a similar problem with the monitor circuit on my 2488. The monitor volume would simply not do anything. Turn it off for a while and it would work for 15-30 minutes. I took it to the TEAC repair center in Santa Monica, CA and after the 2nd repair (don't think anything was ever done....it was the same) they replaced the motherboard with the V1.02 and it has been flawless for 7 years. I don't do a TON of recording, but it needs to work right. They were fast and they warranteed it even though it was 2 years old at the time.

OK- thanks for the info! Do you remember how much that costed you back then if you don't mind my asking?
