I don't think the pads are the problem. I had huge problems with my PLAY and REWIND button. So, I took the 2488 apart and cleaned the PCB, etc... The pads are just plastic and, unless one actually breaks off, they just go up and down. It's the switch that they're pushing down that probably needs to be re-soldered or replaced.
