Tascam 22-4 vs other Tascam 4Track machines

Now THIS is what I call a 4 track...

The 22-4 I was looking at went for about 220 which is a bargain imo but it's not about price... I feel this machine is much better quality, build wise and sonically.

Just requesting a close up shot of the heads (can't be bothered inspecting this one, over an hour drive from me). I trust the seller, he has sold 20+ decks, all fully refurbed.

Looks to be in pretty sweet condition! ;)

The price is still a bit high though! I bought an A3340S used, in similar condition 20 years ago and only paid $600 for it then...and that was from a dealer with a 90 day warranty.

Good luck!

Cheers! :)

take this as a minority opinion, but i believe the '70s era TEAC decks have more character and sound cooler than the '80s era. these would be the 3340, 3440 and 40-4 series 4-tracks. they do tend to be more worn and problematic though ... although i feel the build quality is more durable overall, with higher quality (and older) components.

I agree the price is high... but then again it is as good condition as you can find assuming the heads look as good as the rest of the machine. Also 600 bucks 20 years ago was a loooot more than 600 bucks these days (not that I would know )

The 1 mil recommendation from TASCAM is probably designed more so for getting longer recording times out of a reel of tape more then a genuine concern over 1.5 mil being dangerous to use on it. The thicker tape might come in handy if you wanted to hit the tape a little harder, level-wise as I believe there's a 3 db headroom gain with 456 over 457.

Cheers!

I believe that the oxide coatings on 456 and 457 were identical. The only difference was the thickness of the backing. The reason 1 mil was specified was because it gave a slightly better head wrap allowing for better measured (and printable) performance numbers. Sonically, you'd be hard pressed to hear any difference.

My apologies!

I was probably thinking of 406/407, which does have published lower specs then 456.

---the DX-4D doesn't work with the 22-4---

It sure should and the manual depicts the DX-4D and the connections.

The 22-2 will not but the 22-4 is set to work w/those DBX units despite any mods to the DX.
