I was looking to get the Presonus Firepod but don't think that my single processor (G5 1.8 GHZ) can handle it. Does anyone know anything about the Tascam 1804 Firewire Interface? I can't seem to find the processor and memory requirements for this unit. If anyone has any feedback on the performance of this interface, I would greatly appreciate hearing it.

Actually, you should be able to run either the Firepod or 1804 just fine with what you've got, just make sure you've got enough memory if you're gonna be running heavy on plugs. If you want 8 descent pres out of the box, I'd say go with the firepod, and if you don't need so many onboard pres and are more concerned with expandablity/flexibility, go with the 1804. I don't think you can go wrong with either way.

I'm currently running the 1804 on a P4 1.7GHZ notebook for my mobile rig, and it's been a solid piece.

Thanks for the feedback. What kind of expandibility are we talking about? I would like to have something to record drums so I think 4 pres should be enough. Presonus actually recommends G4/Dual 1 GHz so I took that to be 2 processors (1 more in the box than I have).

I really want something that will allow me to record the whole band. I don't know if it matters but we use all of our own effects pedals even with vocals so I don't think I would be heavy on the computer effects.

As far as expandability of the fw1804 goes, you can get up to 18 inputs via ADAT, SPDIF optical or coax, and 4 additional analog line inputs, and along with that you get 2 midi i/o's. So like I mentioned earlier, If you're gonna be relying on outboard pres I'd go with the 1804, but If you're looking for a quick fix to record your band, I'd go with the Firepod.
