So, I found a Tascam MS-16, 16 track, one-inch analog machine w/ SR for $2150 shipped.
Since I have NO experience with Tascam analog machines, I need opinions on this.
It seems like a HELL of a deal to me, and the guy swears the machine is pristine.
Any thoughts??

16 tracks of sweet analog sound!

Yes!
It sounds great.... but can you trust this guy?
My only concern is that the heads might be badly worn.
Then you will not be getting the full benefit of the Analog warmth and tape compression. Worn heads will reduce the S/N Ratio and you will lose hi frequencies. Your music may sound dull and lifeless and you would have to sink another $2000 or so into heads. Mabye you can get a "Money back Guarantee" if you don't like it return it!
* Even the most carefully handled tape machines will experience head wear over time* Try before you buy!

My guess is it's pretty far to pick it up and check it out,But if it's under 300 miles that would be worth the trip considering the possible downside

thanks, guys.
I think I've just about decided against it.
The guy is way too far for me to go and check it out, and considering that $2000 is a pretty sizable investment, I think I'm gonna hold off.
I REALLY REALLY would like to have a machine like this, though. Tracking drums and bass on it would be great.
oh, well

thanks again,
Michael

Money back?

I hope I didn't steer you wrong.... I love the sound of Analog tape saturation for bass and drums. But buying anything without first trying it out is scary!

Could you meet the seller half way? orget some kind of warranty?

Try looking for the same unit at http://www.UGBM.com

All previous advice sounds good, HOWEVER we now live in the DIGITAL AGE and all analog equipment is plummeting in price…

I recently bought a OTARI 5050 half-track for 100 bucks in NYC. It wasn't pretty but it was mechanically good plus it sounded… Well…… ASTONISHING.

BEST OF LUCK
