its a reviewish post...

i had issues with an old EMU1820...it died.(with my help)

so I said USB...and it was fun, and one was cheap on CL for $50.
it plugged in quickly and was already welcomed by Kristal Audio Engine software soon.

so many weeks or months later, I grabbed a 144 from GC today for $150.
because I thought 144...an old friend.

it looked newer. it was missing the "insert" the old 122 had. it had a headphone jack on the front but I didn't care. its only about 6" from the front to the back, even a lazy person can reach that far.

so the drivers on this new one didn't load real well...I guess my old 32bit XP wanted some older drivers loaded from the website. that worked and was free. time to be online , was about 10minutes more than the older 122 that probably matched the year of my pc.

so once online everything worked the same.

but it seems this newer one didn't have the heavier metal case, but the 144usb is still metal, but thinner. the new one had knobs/pots that weren't as solid in feel. the new had a differrent feel from pot to pot...some felt almost too free? call me insane but I like a good feeling potentiometer. the older 122 seemed to have better pots?

everything else was really the same. the USB interface unit is pretty invisible, no matter which one, to the recording head person.

I'm going to hook up the 122 again and make sure the output amp and sound is the same. hey! its a USB unit....only takes about 2 seconds to plug it in.

the 144 was a trip down memory lane for me, as I owned the 144 4-track years ago, the portastudio cassette.(it was $1200 back then by the way). now a 144 digital, multimultimulti tracker with free effects and editing forever can be had for $149 with 24bit 44.1khz and all that. how cool is that?

its still a fun buzz. amazing.

cheers to Tascam..er.. Teac...or.. whoever you are this month! :drunk:

144 or 122 can't go wrong it seems. no cassettes needed. matter of fact I think i'll buy a USB memory stick car deck and be done with CDR's too.
