Hi guys,
I've just laid my hands on a tascam 122mkii tape cassette recorder and it's in prety good condition.
Unfortunately it has issues when playing and FF. The tape seems to get "stuck", as in the tape doesn't play at a constant speed and when FFing it gets stuck and wont FF any firther (like stickyshed but not). The problem is intermittent and is very odd.
I got the machine for free and have absolutely no money to spend on it. I could really do with the service manual if any of you chaps could let me have a PDF that would be great. I've got a bunch of revox/studer PDF if you wanna do a swap.

Any help would be great... :o

When things like that happen, it's probably time for a rubber refurbishment. The good news is that the parts are very inexpensive. The bad news is that it requires a total teardown of the unit.

If the speed varies, warbles or wows, it usually indicates the belt. Sometimes (less often) the pinchwheel is going bad (but should be checked).

If the RW/FF is sluggish or inoperable, or if the takeup function doesn't work on Play (which results in eating tapes), it would indicate the two little rubber tires on the clutch assembly.

Both of these repair items require a teardown of the deck, including removal and disassembly of the cassette mech. Belts/tires may be found at common electronics shops and online, plus Tascam Parts. Tascam would be the exclusive source of the pinchwheel assembly.

;)

Cheers dave,
The belts look prety good to me and the fella i got it of said that, to the best of his memory, it had this kind of problem from new!
Could it be a problem with the voltages?
I know for R2R machines, there are a few adjustments for voltages to the reel motors...

thanks
