From what I can find out doing research online, there seems to be so similar problems, but nothing exactly what i'm experiencing.

Just this morning, I hit the play button, and all of a sudden the tape speed is faster then normal...almost fast forward. After a period of time however, the speed suddenly goes into normal speed and works fine. This period of time varies, initially it was about 5 secs, but seems to be getting longer, last count was 20 secs. After this initial period however, it does work fine.

no loose belts, everything looks good inside...then again it's all direct drive. this happens everytime I hit play.

I'm not sure where to start. The deck is in good shape, and has given me great service for the 6 years i've had it after I bought it used.

any assistance/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

after some hit and miss troubleshooting, I believe I found the problem....the head/capstan assembly isn't lifting immediately. From what I can figure out, there's a flywheel with a belt connected to a motor, and the belt, while it doesn't look loose, could be, as the motor seems to be spinning and when I manually move the flywheel it does bring the assembly up to play the tape.

at this point, it makes sense to replace the belt....any known pitfalls to avoid? anyone else have this problem? I'll have to dig out the service manual to see what it says, but as most know with service manuals, they aren't always helpful.

Sounds like a belt issue especially if it has not been used in a while.

Make sure to get the counter belt as well.

Clean in there well with isopropyl alcohol and Qtips.

Contact Bob here. he has them and will get them out quickly = Tape Deck Belts: Tascam

If you would like the belt change procedure send me an e-mail address, and I'll send it over.

thanks for the input......

the machine has been used fairly regularly since I have had it, but it could be the original belt on it, so about time to go anyway.

I'll try to get a replacement locally, but if no luck, I'll contact bob.

drop me a line at snarfdude@REMOVETHIShotmail.com regarding the belt change procedure.

It's a great deck....and while I don't use cassette a lot, I do have quite a bit on cassette which I like to digitize now and then. Good to have a machine for it.

Thanks for the help. I got a replacement belt from a local repair place I used to go to for other belts for a few bucks, and works great, though I don't think it really was the problem. The drives reduction pulley (which is what it is called in the manual) had the lubrication dry up in the shaft causing it not to move as free as it should. I noticed this after I put on the belt. I took it off and lubed it up and now works great.
