I was goofing on the Tascam site looking at their "legacy" gear. The 112 and 102 (both mk2) caught my attention. They say they are made to be "mixdown" or "mastering" decks, but they both have the whole 1/4 track stereo thing going on. Wouldn't a mix down/mastering deck have 1/2 track? Anyone use these? I'm just curious now. So, anyway. Thanks.

They're probably nice decks but it's still slow standard speed cassette and narrow track. It's just salesman talk, this whole "mastering" deck thing. I think it'd be cool to pass around cassette copies (like a poor man's vinyl) or maybe listen to playback on your stereo system but I wouldn't use it as a mixing down medium from high performance tape machines and calling it your "master". You're right, a 1/2 track (even 1/4 track), at higher speeds and wider track formats or CD-R would be a better choice.

Interesting. I wish I could find a 1/2 track cassette deck.
