Tasam 788....Decisions...

I have a chance to buy a Tascam 788 with cd burner, and an Alesis SR-16 for $250 for the package.

But I also have another deal on a Korg d1200.

I'm leaning towards the Korg simply because the HD is bigger (40gb) and the Burner is built in.

But my delimma is learning curve, I dont have tons of time to sit with a manula and play around, I'm not completely "retarded" when it comes to recording, but I wanna know:

Which would you buy? and Why?

Nice choice. I just picked up a 2nd 788 to run as a slave for live recording with my band.

Upgraded the hard drive to a Seagate 80meg (to make 64 megs total) fairly cheaply.

The 788 is a great machine for the price---hey I did exactly the same ---you do have to upgrade the software version on the machine first tho...
 
It's already been upgraded to 2.0 version (is that the latest version?)

And I got a 40gb 7200 rpm HD for it. So I'm ready to dig into it. It should be here on thursday, I cant wait.

I might be wrong, but I think that the last version I had before getting a 2488 was 2.2. But don't quote me on that.

All I could find on Tascams site was 2.0......links?


Also You guys have any tips/tricks for me?
 
Go to Tascamforums and ask at the 788 post.The guy will hook you up big time.
 
I once plugged my headphones into the footswitch jack by accident and the machine just quit working. Those two jacks are right next to each other. My 788 would boot up and load a song, but no playback, recording, anything. Watch out for that one. That's the only problem I've had with mine--the drive is easy to swap out, and it sounds really good especially at 24 bit. I have to throw some blankets over it though to record in the same room with it. Wish I had the CD-R too--I have to mix to a MasterLink. Enjoy!

WOW! I'm surprised yours is so noisy. I never had that problem.

Also, 24bit? The 788?
 
I guess it's the HD spinning that makes the noise. I'm recording acoustic instruments in a really quiet room and I can hear it so the mic must too. And yes, the 788 does 24 bit. It asks you when you're creating a new song if you want 16 or 24 bit.

After looking through the manual, it doesn't look that much easier to export wav files with the CD-RW than with my MasterLink.

You might be right. I haven't had one for so long, I'm forgetting some of the most basic things about it. I don't know why I thought it only recorded 16 bit.
 
Yeah mine mad enoise too--but it never was enough noise to interfere with my recording...Yes--24 bit
 
Anyone know where I can get the SCSI cable for the Tascam cd Burner?


I bought mine used and it didnt come with it......frustrating!
