Hi,

I'm currently using a Crown PZM mic taped to the underside of the lid of an upright and getting MUCH better results than with regular mics. Anyway, I got out and bought a roll of Gaffer's tape and started using it to tape the PZM to the lid. Now my concern is not leaving residue but possibly damaging the black shiny finish to the piano by peeling off the tape constantly. My question is: Do you have a suggestion on how I may affix the PZM to the piano's undeside lid without possibly peeling off the black finish ?

Thanks!

Daniel

Use the blue masking tape that you can buy at Home Depot.

This stuff is designed not to have adverse effects upon the surface you stick it on.

If it's real gaffer's tape, it shouldn't be a problem. It might be better taking it off more often, as it won't have time to get really stuck on there. Try using thin strips.

Electrical tape might work better. There may be residue, but it is less grippy, if you know what i mean.

Console tape might work, too. It is way less sticky, but might not hold the mic up for long, if at all.

The Gaff tape that I got has pretty strong gripping power and comes off without leaving residue. However, I'm more concerned about possibly peeling off the piano finish. Thanks for your reply.

I will try that. Thanks Carl.

The gaffer tape should be fine. Pianos have pretty durable finishes, and they aren't the type of finish that's likely to be pulled off by the likes of gaffer tape.

I use a Audio-Technica AT849 stereo PZM on a grand piano all the time.
I put some velcro tape on the Mic and the piano after I found the sweet spot.
It has been 2 years and I have not tried to remove the tape from the piano yet. I hope it will not damage the piano.......

Thanks again for all your replies. Much appreciated!

I picked up some pro painters tape which is described as being perfect for what I'm looking for. It removes without residue (until about 8 days) and also won't harm my piano. ;)

Thanks!

Daniel :)

Personally, I would not use ANYTHING except gaff tape. Since youa re taping to the underside of the lid I think that using something besides gaff tape is definately going to damage your piano. It may not be the paint finish, but all the other tapes that have been listed above will probably not hold the mic in place very well. When the mic finally falls off inside the piano it could nic a string, scratch a post, break the mic etc.... I know fo certain that board tape and painters tape and even electrical tape will not hold the weight of a mic upside down for very long at all. Gaff tape should not present a problem. Especially if you take it off fairly often so it does not get baked on.
