I've got a tape from a friend that was Dbx encoded, but the Dbx unit to play it back on isn't working. (Isn't that Murphy's Law #77) Is anyone aware of a way of filtering (unfiltering??) or an EQ setting that will override the Dbx encoding on the the songs once they are loaded into CE ...... or do I spend several hours experimenting on one 5 minute song?

If you don't have a DBX decoder you could try to up your mid's and upper's there should be plenty of bass already with an eq. How are you recording from your tape out or a pre?

I've got all of my recording gear hooked up through my Mackie board, so yeh I'm using a pre. I've got a stand alone CD recorder as well, so I'm thinking about recording it on that unit first then ripping it on my PC before dumping it into Cool Edit. In this case the A-D conversion in the sound card just might make things even more complicated. ..... or am I now making things more complicated??

you might be makeing it more difficult that way but if it work's. If you are getting good sound through your monitor speaker's meaning it sounds good It should sound ok in your recording the unfortunate side of dbx is the compression which sounds good if you have a dbx decoder but on a normal tape deck will sound a little muddy, or tinny depending on how it was recorded. I would try to get it to sound right to you through your monitor's and then try to record it to your pc.

Well this particular project seems to be slipping further down my to do list, but I should get to it within the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the help, you've confirmed what I thought I would have to do.
