Tape mellowing with age

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but I'm finding that my old tapes have mellowed a little with age - quite nicely...

I posted on another thread about a track that has deteriorated on a 1982 recording on my Tascam 244. Half the track had gone and half remained ok. This was a vocal track and after copying to a DAW I tried re-recording the first half of the track digitally using the same mic as for the original, plugged into the same socket of 244 with line out to the DAW. I'd say the top had deteriorated by about 3dB or so. But it was difficult to replicate the original recording by, say, turning down the top on the 244 input channel. I'm pretty sure my voice hasn't change that much. The original had assumed a distinctive tone. I'm wondering if old recordings - at least those recorded on really good gear age like fine wine . I'm even wondering about archiving my stuff back to tape for this reason. Any thoughts anyone?

It's kind of like the difference between brwnd new guitar strings and a set that has been on for a week or so.
