Do hand-held Tape Erasers work?
Some examples now on eBay:

Item No. 120424348130
Item No. 220421851984
Item No. 170335693122

I'm curious. I've never used one.

Yes they do work...some better than others. I don't know much about the ones you have listed there, but I'm pretty sure the Realistic model is a good high-power unit, and maybe the Benjamin too. I have an Inmac 7180 that I took in trade in a transaction with Beck some time ago. For good reason i took it on faith that it was worthy. He says that model is his fav. He had two of them. Now he has one, and I'm happy with mine. Don't know yet about degaussing 1" tape...I think it'll do just great, but I can testify that on 1/2" tape you'd never know there was anything on it...*BOOM*...wiped.

Beck, like, "Two Turn tables and a microphone" beck? WOW. I heard he was gonna say "i've got two tape erasers and a microphone" but had to change it at the last minute. Now I know why.

No, not that Beck! He's not even a real Beck or a Hansen; He's a Campbell. And his real given name is spelled Bek (Bek David Campbell). I was Beck before he was... he stole my name! :)

And really now, when we think of Beck we sould think of Jeff Beck first, and then me, and then those other slobs. ;)

Timothy Beck

That's funny. I kind of thought that I recognized the name from the board, but I thought it would have been funny anyway.

I was thinking the other day that because the erase head on a recorder whacks the tape with a high frequency AC current to scamble the ferrites up, good erasing using the erase head might be more effective at speeds the exact opposite to good recording. That is, the slower the tape speed through the erase head then the better the erase as the ferrites get more of the, ah, 'treatment' than they would at the speeds we would normally record at.

I've been putting some of my 7" reels through the Nagra full track erase heads at 3 1/2" ips, sometimes twice, to erase them for later use. There's nothing left after that, if you can stand the wait that is.

I used to have some bulk erasers that I remember working pretty well but like a lot of stuff from that time they somehow got dissappeared.

Radio Shack 44-233A Bulk eraser

I just bought one of these a month ago only to find out it leaves a fairly loud ghost image of the previous recording. I was erasing a brand new 1/2" RMGI 911 that was recorded a week before. The manual only stated it would erase videotape and cassettes. I am now looking for a more powerful one myself.:(

I do Not own one but from what I have read they do work.

They work and they do a better job than use a full track erase head to erase the tape, for sure. Why?: all erase heads done by high frequence always add noise. A bulk eraser uses a 50 or 60 Hz powerful magnetic field that leaves the tape virtually identical to a virgin tape.

Here is mine:

And

And not only that, the bulk erasers can demagnetize your screwdrivers and other tools that you might use for head adjustment. Razor blades too!

(you do demagnetize your screwdrivers before getting them close to your heads don't you?)
